Abstract : Desorption of an adatom from a solid surface through vibrational excitation by by an IR laser is studied using a generalized master equation approach and the isomnesic approximation. A sharp transition from no desorption to almost instantaneous desorption is seen as the bound-to-continuum population transfer rate is varied. The critical rate increases linearly with laser power.
