Abstract : Progress is described on a project whose goal is the development of practical tools for evaluating the reliability and availability of fault-tolerant control or sensor systems. The approach relies on the generation of a Markovian model for the behavior of the system. The project entails the investigation of approximate techniques for deriving results from these models. The basic idea is that the time-behavior of the model decomposes into two time scales where the results of interest occur in time frames intermediate to the two time scales. By modifying previous theory, an approximate evaluation scheme is developed and shown to be valid when the model possesses a decomposability property such that the decomposed classes obey a relatively weak sufficient condition. Examples are discussed. Also, means for generating the exact answers to which the results of the approximation will be compared are discussed.
