Abstract : Investigates sheath phenomena in electronegative glow discharges. Calculations have been performed for He/HC1, Ar/HC1, and Xe/HC1 mixtures to model the cathode fall region of a gas discharge. The electric field, Townsend ionization and attachment coefficients, as well as positive ion, negative ion, and electron densities were were calculated as a function of distance. Attachment was found to increase the voltage and length of the cathode fall. Efficient ionization of the electronegative gas, HC1, which has a low ionization threshold, resulted in an overall contraction of the cathode fall in He mixtures.
