Abstract : Electron (proton) trajectory equations are obtained for various electric field and magentic field configurations. These trajectory equations provide the basis for calculating self-stripping, which was proposed as an important beam attenuation process. The average relative electron-beam energy is calculated to determine the beam energy and configuration dependence of the stripping process. Results for beam attenuation due to electron beam stripping are obtained for the zero-field model and space charge field model. Proton beam stripping was shown to be negligible. Attenuation versus distance graphs are presented for various magnetic field angles and relevant beam parameters such as beam energy, beam intensity and beam radius. Keywords: Neutral beam; Stripping; Ionization; Beam induced stripping; Polarization drift; Cross section.
