Abstract : The sum rule for extinction is not changed when magnetic dipole as well as electric dipole ration is considered. Moreover, the limitation of electron mean free paths in metallic particles does not invalidate sum rules. When metallic particles are sufficiently small, the effect of their boundaries is to decrease peak extinction while simultaneously broadening it in such a way that integrated extinction remains constant.
