Abstract : The primary objective of this program was the growth of high quality single crystals for evaluation as potential candidates for electro-optic phase shifters in millimeter-wave applications. The research program was initially conceived as two parallel efforts. The first involved the application of new crystal growth techniques to the growth of strontium-barium titanate solid solutions. These materials are promising for the above applications but have been difficult to grow in the form of high quality single crystals. The second part of this program involved a study of some newly discovered ferroelectric materials; the ternary heavy metal fluorides and the niobates and tantalates of scandium. During the first year, it was decided that this latter effort should become the main focus of the program.
