Abstract : A data base is being developed for calculation of quasi-binary and quasi-ternary phase diagrams of ceramic systems. Previous segments of this base cover combinations of Cr2O3, MgO, A12O3, SiO2, CaO, Si3N4, A1N, BeO, Y2O3 and Ce2O3. Sixty -six quasi binary and nineteen quasi ternary systems have been calculated. The current work extends the base to cover GeO2, HfO3, ZrO2 and TiO2 which are of interest in applications requiring toughness and structural performance at high temperatures. This has been effected by employing available source of thermochemical and phase diagram data. Recently it has been shown that by alloying GeO2 with SiO2 a whole range of glasses can be synthesized with tailor-made coefficients of expansion. Utilization of such compositions offers the possibility of enhancing the high temperature oxidation resistance of ceramic composites in which a mixed GeO2-SiO2 phase which a desired CTE would replace the conventional SiO2 as a filler.
