Abstract : Assassination is a topic with which most Americans have only a passing familiarity. Such unfamiliarity then leads to confusion and misunderstanding. This article seeks to provide a definition of assassination which will allay that misunderstanding. By providing a definition we seek to edify. A clear-cut definition, however, is not easy to produce and it is here that the contribution to the accumulation of knowledge is made by drawing a contrast to a more familiar term, murder. An examination of the historical perspective, the world-wide use and impact of assassination and the international legal view is briefly conducted. The impact of assassination upon the United States is also reviewed. The conclusion provides some hope that by knowing better what assassination is, and collaterally, what it is not, the American public can be reassured of the propriety of military actions.
