Abstract : An analytical approach is presented for investigating the quantitative effects of a decision aid upon user workload and organization performance. The approach is applied to the problem of submarine emergency control. Results of the analysis indicate the importance of considering the organizational context when contemplating the design of decision aids and illustrate the implications for workload of meta-decisions about whether and how decision aid information is to be used.
