Abstract : The main objective was to define conditions under which nonlinear behavior of the propagating medium would be in evidence and to use quantitative evaluation of this nonlinearity to characterize the medium. This approach has taken us into the investigation of many phenomena. The description of some is adequate if one uses only the linear form of the equations. In some instances the nonlinearity was observable but could be ignored in the first approximation. In other instances the existence of nonlinearity forms the basis of the entire investigation.
