Abstract : Three problems were examined under this program: Reaction kinetics were studied in nematic lyotropic media and it was demonstrated that there are dramatic changes in reaction rates as one goes through the phase transitions from lamellar to cylindrical to spherical micellar structures. Several model reactions were studied including the catalyzed hydrolysis of phosphinate esters, where a more than three order of magnitude difference was observed in the rate constants between phases. Orientational spectroscopic techniques were developed for studying guest and hosts in lyotropic liquid crystals. A pearlescent suspension display concept was developed and reduced to practice which might be useful in large size electrically operated shutters.
