Abstract : Eleven commercially available aqueous polyurethane dispersions have been evaluated for use in the preparation of high explosive moulding powders. The polymers were coagulated by addition of electrolytes to aqueous slurries of RDX containing the dispersions. In several cases polymer coating of the explosive crystals has been effected. The impact sensitiveness of these compositions and physical mixtures of of the polymer particles with RDX have been determined and the effect of coating efficiency, particle size and polymer properties on sensitiveness is discussed. Formulations suitable for use as high explosive moulding powders have been prepared from two dispersions with additional incorporation of zinc stearate. Impact sensitiveness, shock sensitivity and vacuum thermal stability of these formulations have been assessed.
