Abstract : Fatigue crack growth and fracture toughness of seven combinations of aluminum matrix alloys reinforced with particulate silicon carbide have been measured. The matrix alloys used were of both the work hardening and heat treatable varieties. Two of the alloys were made by mechanical alloying--powder metallurgy fabrication methods and the remainder were made by ingot metallurgy. Composites were tested in both as-received (extruded) and peakaged conditions. Fractography was done for all the composites, as were cross sections to examine surface roughness.
