Abstract : Following laparotomy and retroperitoneal dissection, dogs increase skeletal muscle proteolysis and excrete increased quantities of nitrogen in the urine. Pretreatment with a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor (Ibuprofen) diminished this response in the 5 animals studied to date. More animals are required to make firm conclusions as to the effectiveness of this therapy on post traumatic metabolism.
