Abstract : An experimental and theoretical program has been completed which thoroughly characterizes the e-beam sustained discharge HgBr laser. The preliminary design of a 100 Hz, 2 J HgBr laser has been performed. From measurements of HgBr fluorescence efficiency as a function of E/N the primary laser excitation process has been identified as the collisional excitation of HgBr2 by electrons. A self-consistent set of excitation cross sections is derived from the experiment. The formation efficiency of HgBr(B) in a discharge is 6%.
