Abstract : Methods are assembled for calculating the components of ocean heating/cooling from above, viz. short-wave radiation, albedo, longwave radiation, and evaporative and sensible heat exchange with the atmosphere. The aim is to secure the best possible balance between precision and simplicity, bearing in mind the inherent limitations of meteorological information. Much of the material comes from the literature, but a consolidation of the radiant heating input parameters and a simplification of the atmospheric heat exchange calculation are believed to be original developments.
