Abstract : Employer-sponsored pensions are one component of the retirement income security system, supplementing social security retirement benefits and private savings. Workers are likely to be better able to plan for retirement if they understand their pension plans' eligibility requirements for early and normal retirement benefits. However, according to our analysis, millions of workers in public and private defined benefit pension plans lack correct knowledge about their future eligibility for early retirement benefits and about the earliest ages at which they can retire with either reduced or full benefits.
