Abstract : The tactical basing structure is seen by the author as being under fire from several sources including urban encroachment, airspace encroachment and environmental concern as well as Congressional pressure to reduce the size of the Air Force base structure to save money. Many of these problems stem from the nature of the fighter mission and the types of training areas required. Moreover, anticipated future changes in the tactical fighter force may exacerbate the situation as faster, more capable aircraft enter the inventory. The author examines each base at which tactical fighter aircraft are stationed in the Continental United States and Alaska, makes assessment of the current situation and specific recommendations for the future. Finally, certain other basing and nonbasing actions are reviewed which may help lessen the problems raised.
