Abstract : Abstract Deuterium NMR is used to indicate the degree of ordering the PBLG helix axis in lyotropic phases. Sources of difficulty when comparisons are made with theory are emphasized. The preparation of magnetically oriented gels of PBLG in benzyl alcohol is described. Delineation of the phase boundaries with NMR probes is a convenient way to monitor the gelation process. The synthesis and properties of PBLG having the benzyl ester exchanged for oligomers of ethylene glycol is presented. Keywords: Liquid crystalline polymers, Deuterium.
