Abstract : This report discusses the reliability of finite element analysis techniques in place of structural test in the context of airworthiness assessment. Using an example as illustration, the paper shows that in order to obtain the meaningful results, the analysis must be performed with extreme care by an experienced analyst. The reliance on the finite element analysis alone may result in serious misdiagnosis. The verification and the certification of programs and the certification of users are discussed.
