Abstract : The report investigates electromagnetic backscattering from three dimensional objects. It uses the following simulation approaches: physical optics together with the physical theory of diffraction; numerical methods; geometrical optics with the geometric theory of diffraction. Physical objects modelled are a sphere and a spherical segment. The report concludes that geometrical optics together with the geometric theory of diffraction is the most practical way of calculating EM backscatter from conducting objects.
