Abstract : In order to recognize 3-dimensional objects in 2-dimensional scenes a shape description, complete enough to determine the 3-dimensional object, must be recovered from the scene. Although it is possible to recover some 3-dimensional information, for instance shape from shade (21) or shape from texture (13), in general the information recovered will be a 2-dimensional representation of the object. Many methods are available for interpreting 3-dimensional objects in 2-dimensional arrayed range images (3), 20; however this is considered as a somewhat different problem, since depth information can be derived from the scene with little or no ambiguity.
