Abstract : A method for evaluating break up, or shattering anc cracking may be by the use of the crack arrest fracture toughness, Ka. Use of this Ka would not be restricted to steels, but could be applied to other armor materials also. The crack arrest fracture toughness, KIa, of the two steels were shown to be different, the 4130 being tougher than 4340. The significance of this can only be ascertained by comparing these results with ballistic test data. Keywords: High strength steels; Armor plate; Transition temperatures; Fracture toughness; Mechanical properties; Dynamic properties; Crack propagations; Ballistic testing.
