Abstract : This report summarizes work done by the author during the past twelve months on the dynamics of complex rotating systems. Our recent work on the mechanics of rotating elastic structures shows a complex dependency of asymptotic equilibrium states on physical parameters such as elasticity of the material and total momentum of the structure. For multiply articulated rigid bodies undergoing large angle rotations, it is shown explicitly how there can be a sensitive dependence of equilibrium states on parameters of inertia and angular momentum. This suggests that recent work on geometrically nonlinear beam theories may be significant not only for transient analysis, but for accurately modeling asymptotic dynamics as well.
