Abstract : The major objective of this article is to examine eigenvalue equations expressed in terms of dimensionless variables. Our application is to underwater acoustic ducts for which the square of the index of refraction is piecewise linear. For this case the eigenvalue equation involves the Airy functions A1, B1, A1, and B1 for various arguments. We consider two related approaches to the eigenvalue problem. The first approach is the usual one, while the second approach is that of this article. The first approach is to determine the eigenvalues, i.e., the mode phase velocity, as a function of frequency and the profile parameters. Given a sound speed profile, one iterates the eigenvalue equation to determine the mode phase velocity as a function of frequency. This approach is useful when treating profiles with a large number of layers.
