Abstract : This report discusses a prototype expert system for event discrimination. We wanted to determine whether applying an expert system to handle and interpret satellite telemetry data is feasible and worthwhile, considering the large amount, the variety and the complicated nature of the data. The system makes decisions regarding the validity of events by using a knowledge base acquired from satellite systems experts. Decisions are influenced by the health of the satellite, the sensors and the data processing, by knowledge of the phenomenology, by physical phenomena affecting the sensors and by other potential sources of erroneous information. The expert system is an apt vehicle for growth of systems knowledge, for quick decision making, and for giving explanations of the reasoning and of the derived information base to ensure user confidence.
