Abstract : Preliminary efforts are made to develop a methodology for analyzing the progressive failure of projectile/target systems under hypervelocity impact. Particular emphasis is placed on the thermal/mechanical interaction effects not only for evaluating the change in the local strain rates and material properties but also in finding the temperature and latent heat at which the solid may locally transform into liquid and/or gas. Such a transition can be accurately determined by the inflection points on the time dependent H-function curve that serves as a measure of the order and/or disorder of a physical system.
