Abstract : Copious quantities of extreme ultraviolet radiation and soft x ray radiation can be emitted by small amounts of material is heated by a rapidly pulsed electrical discharge. The radiation, largely between h(nu) about 100 eV and a few keV, is used for x-ray lithography, microscopy, and other applications. This review contains a summary of available experimental data on imploding z-pinches, and an overview of theoretical issues concerning radiation production in the pinch plasma.
