Abstract : An important issue in manufacturing systems involved in factory automation is the support for fault tolerance. This paper describes the hierarchical physical and control structure of manufacturing systems and proposes a hierarchical model for fault tolerance support. The usefulness of the hierarchical fault tolerance model is shown in the manufacturing system domain and the main issues involved in the general applicability of the model are discussed.
