Abstract : A survey of three swimming pools was conducted at Offutt AFB Nebraska by Lt Col Robert D. Binovi, Chief Water Quality Function. Bacteriological contamination, as evidenced by positive total coliform samples, had been experienced at the three pools for about a month prior to the survey. The results of the survey showed that there was a chemical imbalance in the pools and insufficient alkalinity. A broken pipe, unstable water, possible dead areas in the pool, swimmers sanitary habits, inadequate cleaning practices could all have contributed to the problem. Recommendations: (1) Positive total coliform samples should be confirmed; (2) Fecal coliform tests should be used to help determine the severity of the contamination; (3) Alkalinity needs to be checked frequently; (4) Soda ash should be substituted for caustic soda; (5) Unnecessary backwashing chlorine residual should be checked; (6) Free available and total available chlorine residuals should be checked at least daily to determine organic loading. (7) Quaternary ammonium algicides should be avoided; (8) Replace leaking piping at the Officer's Club pool; and (9) Allow sufficient time for the pool to filter and stabilize the water before opening it after having been drained.
