Abstract : (C sub n)-squared profiles from nine data collection efforts using the NOAA stellar scintillometer have been examined to assess the statistical independence for (C sub n)-squared values from separated altitude layers. Linear correlation coefficients between (C sub n)-squared values have been calculated for all combinations of layer pairs for both short and long term time periods. The tendency of measured (C sub n)-squared values for different layers to synchronously rise or fall has also been evaluated. Results indicate that the (C sub n)-squared data fails several tests of layer independency and that the data may be invalid at least at some altitudes.
