Abstract : The factors controlling the performance of short, low velocity railguns are studied and mathematical expressions defining the bounds of realizable efficiencies are obtained. The restrictions governing the validity of the expressions are discussed. The expressions are based on the proposition that during acceleration of the projectile in the railgun, the current falls almost linearly with time. Under the conditions discussed in this report it is shown that the maximum achievable efficiency is bout 1.6%.
