Abstract : Six commercial carbon fibers are characterized by X ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), or Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA). Physical, structural, and surface parameters required to describe major properties of carbon fibers are examined and discussed. The correlation of these parameters is essential for developing optimizing and desired carbon composite materials.
