Abstract : Purchase of commercially available material is one of the primary acquisition sources for the military. This source is widely believed to be a very cost-effective alternative to funded development of specially engineered items. Another advantage of this approach is more rapid procurement than in-house or contract development of equivalent items. Acquisition of a commercial dental computer system meeting military needs would likely provide major cost savings for the military dental services. The objective of this study was to evaluate commercially available dental computer systems for potential use in military dentistry. Only general features of these systems were compared to the requirements identified in the Tri-service Medical Information System functional description for the Dental Support System (DENTSS). There was no attempt to qualitatively compare individual systems against others, to determine which system was 'best' for civilian practice, nor to identify which of these systems, if any, were most appropriate for the military dental environment.
