Abstract : This report describes the design and development of a W-band (75-110 GHz) vector automatic network analyzer. The system was funded under the DoD sponsored University Research Instrumentation Program. The W-band system will be located in the Microwave Laboratory located in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of North Carolina State University. The equipment funded under this program will interface with an existing Hewlett-Packard 8510A automatic network analyzer and will extend the operating frequency range of this instrument to the millimeter-wave bands. Currently, the system is limited to an upper frequency of 26.5 GHz. The enhanced system will permit research to be performed in the area of millimeter-wave characterization of solid-state devices. In particular, we are interested in performing S-parameter measurements on experimental mm-wave devices in order to determine ultimate frequency and performance limitations. It is anticipated that information of this type will contribute to research directed towards developing optimized solid-state devices for mm-wave applications.
