Abstract : The primary objective of this three-year research project was to develop environmentally stable and processible electronically conductive polymers for potential applications in electronics, electro optics, and sensors. Our general approach was to synthesize and characterize several new heteroaromatic polymers and tailor their electronic, optical, and traditional polymer properties for these applications. A further objective was to understand the structure/electronic property relationships in electronically conducting heteroaraomatic polymers. Many new electronically conducting polymers containing carbazole in the main chain were synthesized by a variety of synthetic techniques, characterized, and shown to be solution-processible and stable in air with room temperature d.c. conductivities as high as 1-10/ohm/cm. The mechanism of electronic conduction in 3,6-linked polycarbazoles was shown to be interchain and intrachain motions of radical cations delocalized over a dimeric unit of the polymer. Several other new conducting polymers were synthesized and characterized, including polydiphenylamines, methine-bridged polythiophenes, polypyrroles, and polyfurans. The three different classes of conducting polymers, polycarbazoles, polydiphenylamines,and methine-bridged polyheterocycles, prepared in this research effort, provided us diverse materials to conduct a comparative study of the conduction mechanisms, electronic structures, and chemical, optical, electrical, and physical properties of conducting polymers. A number of potential applications of electrically conducting polymers in microelectronics and sensors were identified and the feasibility demonstrated in exploratory experiments.
