Abstract : The polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of nitroalkanes is accompanied by a decrease in spin-lattice relaxation time even in the absence of a monomer-to-polymer transformation, which is evidently linked to the participation of free radicals in the process. With the objective of elucidating the nature of these free radicals and developing some estimate of their concentration, we undertook to investigate the polymerization of MMA in the presence of tetranitromethane, 1.1-dinitroethane and nitroethane using the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method.
