Abstract : A combination of interactive boundary layer and stability theories has been used to investigate the reasons for the instability of laminar separation bubbles on the leading edge of thin airfoils. It is shown that transition plays an important role and is likely to preclude the existence of long separation bubbles and their supposed instability.
