Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the design, construction and testing of a long haul fiber-optic communication system. This system would remotely monitor the voltage of a one volt, one ampere long-life saltwater battery at nominal depths of 1000 meters. It is the continuation of an ongoing project to monitor the battery in its deployed deepwater environment. The goal was to find methods to increase the transmission distance of the previous short haul (less than 10 kilometers) communication link to greater than 30 kilometers by utilizing a laser source instead of an LED and single mode fiber-optic cable instead of multimode cable. Additionally the capability to monitor various other environmental or system parameters by the use of a microprocessor.
