Abstract : The two parts of this report present an introduction to the design and usage of the NFEARS system developed jointly at the Universities of Maryland and Pittsburgh. The acronym stands for Nonlinear Finite Element Adaptive Research Solver and refers to an experimental software system for the solution of a class of nonlinear, stationary boundary value problems in two space dimensions involving two real parameters. The overall concept of the system is similar to that of the earlier system FEARS for linear elliptic problems and retains many of the features of that system. The eight sections of Part I. describe the mathematical background of the processes incorporated into NFEARS, and the six sections of Part II. serve as User's Manual for the program. As the earlier program, NFEARS was developed strictly as a research tool and is expected to be subject to continual modifications.
