Abstract : This paper summarizes some past and recent work from the author's laboratory on the reactions of carbon dioxide with metal complexes with the objective of suggesting the relevance of this research to some related biological systems. First, the various CO2-metal complex interactions in vivo and in vitro are briefly cited, followed by a description of the reversible activation of carbon dioxide by model rhodium and iridium compounds. Finally, recent results are presented on homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation/reduction of CO2 mediated by metal complexes, including a platinum cluster complex which catalyzes the carbon dioxide conversion at mild conditions.
