Abstract : This project demonstrates that energy consumption for air conditioning can be reduced while still maintaining acceptable comfort for building occupants. The primary purpose of air conditioning is to provide a comfortable environment. However, in an era where energy cost and availability are key concerns, the goal is to provide maximum comfort at minimum cost. Information is provided on the key factors that affect comfort and a method to quantify the level of discomfort. Results of computer simulations show that the 78 degree thermostat setpoint used for air conditioning is too conservative and wastes energy. Energy consumption can be reduced by as much as 20%, depending on the climate of the location, while maintaining an acceptable thermal environment.
