Abstract : This report describes progress on the development of a new laser based combustion diagnostic for the quantitative measurement of both major and minor species in high pressure flames. The technique, Asynchronous Optical Sampling (ASOPS), is a state-of-the-art improvement in picosecond pump/probe spectroscopy. The timing parameters for the current ASOPS instrument are described and consideration is given to the optimization of these parameters. The first ASOPS measurements in a combustion environment have been made on atomic sodium. These measurements are compared with laser induced fluorescence measurements to demonstrate the viability of ASOPS as a combustion diagnostic.
