Abstract : A cooperative university/industry research program into the effect of hafnium additions on the solidification behavior of nickel base superalloys has been carried out under Air Force sponsorship at the University of Pittsburgh and Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company. The research was aimed at gaining a fundamental understanding of the basic solidification characteristics, i.e., development of structure and segregation, of hafnium modified MAR-M200 over the normal range of casting conditions and for a reasonable variation in alloy content, especially hafnium content.
