Abstract : A mode-converting coupler capable of launching the circular TE sub 21 waveguide mode from a rectangular TE10 waveguide has been designed, built and experimentally investigated. These experiments show good agreement between the cylindrical modes measured and those that are predicted. The mode-converting coupler is seen to be able to couple from the TE(sub R sub 10) mode to either the transverse electric cylindrical n,1 (TE(sub C sub n1)), n-odd, mode set, or the TE(sub C sub n1), n-even, mode set. Here, n is the azimuthal mode number and 1 is the radial mode number number. The techniques used to control which cylindrical mode set is generated are given, as well as various uses and extensions of the coupling scheme. One such use is for a second harmonic gyrotron amplifier. Keywords: Microwave coupler; Rectangular waveguide; Circular waveguide; Coupling schemes; Gyrotron amplifier; Second harmonic.
