Abstract : The main objective of this program is to gain an in-depth understanding of the thermodynamics, solid state kinetics, and growth properties in the silver gallium selenium system so that large high optical quality crystals of AgGaSe2 can be reproductively grown to satisfy the very strong demand which has arisen over the past few years. An initial period was devoted to scaling up our crystal growth systems to produce 37mm diameter boules from which longer, more efficient mixing and SHG crystals could be cut. After that was accomplished, we focused mainly on seeking an increased understanding of the optical defects that form in AgGaSe2 and the chemical thermodynamics of the heat treatment procedures that are used to eliminate them. Based on this work we have been making refinements to the crystal growth process to test the applicability of this new data in improving the quality of the crystals produced.
