Abstract : The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been far more successful than other regional organizations. Its success has been largely confined to public diplomacy and cultural interchange. The ASEAN states oppose Vietnam's occupation of Kampuchea (Cambodia) and the growth of Soviet influence in the region; however, individual ASEAN states do not share a common perception of the long-term external threat to the region. This document is the assessment of economic, political and strategic developments in Southeast Asia which could be of significance to Thailand and its interests during the period 1987 to 1997.
