Abstract : The purpose of the this essay is to present a personal view of what is felt to be a significant training shortfall inherent in our Army National Guard (ARNG) Combat Arms Maneuver Brigades and Battalions. It initially focuses on the capabilities of the ARNG Major and the Lieutenant Colonel, his background, the ARNG military educational system and the military environment within which he works. This essay also shows, through personal observation and research, that there are significant weaknesses in the ARNG Field Grade Officers' experience and education, how they train their units and their subordinate leaders and their lack of understanding of how to fight AirLand Battle doctrine. The study makes several recommendations on how to set up various training programs to correct these training deficiencies and raise the experience level of the ARNG Field Grade Officer. This essay by no means was written to degrade the ARNG and its officers. It merely points out that our active Army leadership needs to place more emphasis on the training of these officers and provide them the necessary doctrinal experience so they can properly train their units and subordinate officers to fight the Army's doctrine. The comments and suggestions are for the most part the opinions of the author, but as stated are consistent with current training doctrine.
