Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential utility of the linearized Kalman filter-smoother as a tool for aircraft mishap investigations. The intention was to produce a computer analysis tool which could accurately reproduce the forcing functions required to generate a specified aircraft trajectory. This information is often of value to mishap investigation boards in determining probable pilot actions. The resulting algorithm was subjected to a noise strength sensitivity study, a measurement device precision study, and a study to determine the effects of multiple iterations of the algorithm. The evaluation showed that the algorithm performed well and generated useful results. However, limitations in the current implementation were discovered. As a result of these, the systematic generation of nominal trajectories and elimination of unrealistic output transients were identified as topics for further study.
