Abstract : This report presents the results of a technology program directed towards the development of a long-life high energy density capacitor for applications in space. The desired high energy density of the capacitors manufactured was 40 joules/pound. Life curve data was taken in order to validate the total number of capacitor discharges while operating at a rated voltage of 2.5Kv. The capacitors tested were paper free and were composed primarily of K-film (polyvinylidene fluoride), aluminum foil and an impregnant material. Of the several candidate impregnant materials (TCP, DAP, MIPB, and Silicone Oil), the silicone oil impregnant proved to be most successful for test purposes. Subsequently, various tests were conducted on the high energy density capacitors under various temperatures and vacuum conditions.
